Firoz Journey of Courage
CHANCE for Nepal has been supporting Burns Violence Survivors (BVS) for more than 20 years. Over the years, we have built a very special relationship with this remarkable organisation.
BVS first met Firoz over 12 years ago and has stood beside him ever since.
Firoz comes from the remote Rautahat District in the southern plains of Nepal's Terai region, in Madhesh Province. His parents are farmers from a very poor background, working long hours to provide for their family. Firoz has an older brother.
In 2013, when Firoz was just 11 years old, his life changed in an instant.
Late one afternoon, while his father was working in the fields and his mother was preparing the evening meal, Firoz was playing football with friends. The ball landed on a roof of a nearby house where electrical cables ran across the terrace. As he climbed up to retrieve it, he accidentally came into contact with live wires and suffered a devasting electric shock.
A neighbour witnessed the accident and immediately alerted his parents. Firoz was rushed to the National Medical College Hospital in Birgunj, a journey of almost 5 hours by road, where he received emergency treatment and surgery. After one week, due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. Because specialised paediatric burn care was unavailable, he was quickly referred to the Kanti Children's Hospital where he stayed for 6 months.
Sadly, the severity of his injuries, together with the delay in reaching specialist treatment, meant that Firoz’s arms had to be amputated below the elbows.
Throughout those difficult months, BVS-Nepal provided medical and surgical support, educational support, and accommodation for family. CHANCE funded a high-protein diet, physiotherapy, and counselling to help him recover both physically and emotionally.
As Firoz regained his strength, attention turned to his future.
Through BVS, the Audrey Jacobs Foundation awarded Firoz a full scholarship to attend Surya Vinayak English Secondary School in Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, where he lived in the school hostel. He studied there until Grade 8, but then returned to his home village to continue his education.
Despite all his setbacks, Firoz never gave up.
In 2024, returning to Kathmandu for higher education seemed beyond his family’s means but thanks to the generosity of friends and supporters of BVS, enough funds were raised to give him that opportunity.
This year, Firoz achieved another remarkable milestone. He achieved an impressive 3.07 in management from NASA International College in Kathmandu.
His ambition now is to study for a Bachelor’s degree in Law at university.
Firoz continues to attend BVS for follow-up treatment and remains an active member of their burn survivor network. He has become a role model for other young survivors, taking a leading role in school and community awareness programmes, sharing his own experiences to help prevent burn injuries and encourage others facing similar challenges.
His determination, resilience and courage have inspired everyone who has met him.
Today, however, another obstacle stands in his way.
BVS-Nepal has limited resources to support university education, and without additional financial help, Firoz’s dream of becoming a lawyer may not be realised.
CHANCE wishes to change that.
We are launching a new Education Fund for young burn survivors. Our first donation of £2,500 will help fund Firoz’s first year at university while also establishing the beginnings of a fund to support other children with similar educational needs.
Over the coming months, we will introduce you to three more remarkable children whose futures could also be transformed through education.
If you are able to make a donation - large or small - or would consider matching all or part of our contribution, you will be helping not only Firoz, but other courageous young people who refuse to let tragedy define their future.

We all need a break now and again and everyone at NNSC found much joy to have a mini break to a special place around the Nepalese festivals of Dashain and Tihar.
Kamal ,the president, along with 4 helpers/volunteers and 35 children had a two night magical experience which made memories to treasure.

I recently contacted Aadesh Khadka who won a scholarship to study Hospitality Management and Accountancy at a university in Louisiana, US.
Jane and Brian, the fantastic landlords of The Keep in Guildford had funded his education for over 13 years by hosting these fun quiz nights for CHANCE. Sadly, due to a steep rent increase it was impossible for them to continue as landlords and our quiz nights stopped in February this year.
These nights were always terrific fun and well attended and we became one big family supporting Aadesh and other projects of CHANCE.
Aadesh tells me he is now in his 2nd year of his 4-year course and really enjoying it. He has managed to buy a second-hand car from savings by working during the summer break. He uses his car for traveling between home, college, and work. Presently, he’s working at the university serving meals in the dining hall and also working as a library assistant.
His university follows the credit system, so he’s taking a lighter course load which lessens unnecessary pressure while balancing both work and studies. After completing his undergraduate degree, he plans to find a job in the US to pursue a master’s degree.
He has made a lot of friends through college and work and they spend time together at the weekends and sometimes they organize events on campus. In the long term, he wishes to return to Nepal and start something of his own there.
I and I’m sure all those who attended our quiz nights send him our love and very best wishes and will be following his career with interest. 🥰👏🙏

Thank you BVS (Burns Violence Survivors) for your monthly report.
During August there were 9 patients on the burns unit at the Kanti Children’s Hospital. CHANCE funds the counselling, physiotherapy, weekly food basket as well as a soft toy, knitted doll, toothbrush and stickers to every child coming on the unit.
We have been supporting BVS since its conception in 2008, making them our longest running partner on the ground in Nepal. They are a dedicated team who strive to make a significant difference to the burns patients, not only at the Kanti Children’s Hospital but also at the Kirtipur Hospital where CHANCE also supports the nutrition for the children on the burns unit. During the last 12 months CHANCE has funded 335 nutritional food baskets to these two hospitals, extra calories aids a speedier recovery.
The names have been changed and permission given to share the three cases below, of patients on the burns unit at the Kanti.
Prakash is aged 4 and an only child and lives with his parents who are both work the land in the district of Dolakha. His parents had to take a loan to pay for their son’s medical treatment, surgery and essential medicines as they are very low income.
His father had boiled water to wash chicken meat outside, it was raining at the time due to the rainy season. His mother was preparing a family meal. Prakash went outside to call his father but slipped on the wet ground and fell into the hot water. His father quickly poured cold water over the burns and applied tomatoes in an attempt to ease the pain.
He was then rushed by ambulance, which was a three-hour drive to reach the District Hospital where he stayed overnight for dressings and pain relief. The hospital lacked adequate burn facilitates, so the next day he was referred to the Kanti Children’s hospital - 185kms away.
Prakash suffered 15%, 2nd degree burns to his neck, shoulders and chest. He is undergoing treatment.
Sima is aged 10 and lives with her parents in the district of Siraha. She was flying a kite with her friends when it became lodged on the tin roof of a neighbors one story house. Sima climbed onto the roof to retrieve the kite and she was electrocuted by a bare live wire and became unconscious. People were nearby as it was on a busy road and rushed to help her and informed the authorities who cut off the power. A relative then transported her on a motorbike to the District Hospital in Siraha, 30 minutes away, after being assessed she was referred by ambulance to the Birat Medical College in Morang where she stayed for 12 days. Her family then brought her to the Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu by bus for further specialized treatment.
At present, due to her head injuries, she has been transferred to the nearby Teaching Hospital, and continues her care there. She sustained burn injuries to her head, face, and both feet. Despite the severity of her burns, incredibly, she remains active. She is the second child in the family, with an older sister and two younger brothers. She was studying in grade 6 before this tragic incident. Her mother and uncle are staying with her in hospital, while her father, burdened by huge financial strain, has reportedly lost hope in continuing her treatment. To cover medical expenses, her family has already spent over NPR 100,000 (£590) which was raised through selling her mother’s jewelry and their livestock. Her mother and uncle remain her primary caretakers and continue to ensure her recovery despite the ongoing challenges.
She was transferred to T.U. Teaching Hospital on 25 August 2025 for plastic surgery on her head. She is currently undergoing treatment there.
Chaya is 18 months old and lives his parents and sister in the district of Jumla. His father works as a carpet seller and his mother a housewife. The family had travelled to Kathmandu to stay with their extended family as his mother had recently had another baby. She was warming oil to give her baby a massage and Chaya who was playing nearby reached for the oil, and spilt it on himself, His mother quickly applied Aloe-Vera to the affected area and rushed him to the nearby Medical Centre 5 minutes away where some ointment was applied. The health worker advised further treatment considering the seriousness of the injury.
They took him to Kanti Children’s Hospital, a 30-minute drive, where he received medical care, medicines and burn management treatment. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition, and they have indicated that surgery may be necessary as part of his recovery process. His treatment is still ongoing under hospital supervision.

Jenny's garden is still work in progress, but is looking great. Funds raised from Jenny's parents, Jackie and Dave in Jenny's memory live on. Jenny loved Nepal and its people and the garden is a living tribute. Funds raised by them also went towards the temple for the hospital. As time passes, more trees and planting will take place. 🙏🥰

CHANCE for Nepal
Thank you BVS (Burns Violence Survivors) for sharing your report for April.
I share 6 cases of the 9 patients supported in the burns unit during April. The report from BVS makes tragic reading as so many accidents are easily preventable. In total, 16 food baskets, 12 goody bags, 59 physiotherapy sessions and 60 counselling sessions, (all funded through CHANCE) were provided to the children and their parents.
All names have been changed and permission to share was granted by the parents.
Sumitra is aged two and a half and lives with her parents and 4 siblings in the district of Okhaldhung. Her father works as a farmer and her mother is a housewife.
Sumitra was with her mother in the kitchen, other family members were elsewhere around the house, her mother had heated some hot ghee, (clarified butter) and placed it near the open fire whilst she busied herself with other chores. Meanwhile, Sumitra slipped and fell into the hot vessel, getting badly burned. Her mother panicked, calling out for help and she quickly poured cool water on the injured area. The family then took her to her to a local health post first aid. The following day, because her wounds looked severe they decided to take her to the burns unit at the Kanti Children’s Hospital 110 kms away.
She suffered 10% 2nd degree burns to her bottom, thighs and arm. She is currently undergoing treatment.
Padam is aged 12 and lives with his parents and 1 sibling in Kathmandu. He suffered severe burns when alone at home tried to cook himself something to eat on the gas stove, unaware it had a gas leak. He used a lighter and suddenly his clothes caught alight. His parents were working in their shop nearby.
Hearing the boy's cries for help, a tenant living in the same house quickly rushed to the scene and poured cold water over the burns and called Padam’s parents, who rushed home immediately and took Padam to HAMS Hospital by taxi for emergency attention where he received dressings and ointment. However, since the hospital lacked burn facilities they referred him to the Kanti Children’s Hospital for specialized burn treatment. He has now been discharged and is recovering at home.
Parsad is 12 months old and lives with his parents in the district of Kavrepalanachok. His mother is a housewife and father a furniture maker
Parsad’s mother had gone to work in the field, and his father was in Kathmandu on business. Parsad was at home with his grandmother and his 11-year-old brother.
After cooking noodle soup for his brother, his grandmother served his brother and put the bowl of noodle soup on the floor. Meanwhile, Parsad was playing around the area when he accidentally dipped his hand into the hot soup and got severely burned. His grandmother quickly called for her daughter and she applied tomatoes and aloe-vera to the wound. She then took Parsad to a nearby local pharmacy, where he received first aid treatment. The pharmacist advised he go to Kanti Children’s Hospital for further treatment. He traveled 80kms to the burns unit at the Kanti and is undergoing treatment.
Dinesh is 9 months old and lives with his mother and brother in Kathmandu. His father works in Malta to help his family financially.
Dinesh was playing at home and his mother left the room to go to the bathroom, Dinesh crawled to a pan of hot water which had been put on the floor to cool for drinking water later. Hearing Dinesh scream she rushed in and quickly removed his clothing and pored cold water over the wound, applied aloe-vera and rushed him to the Kanti Children’s Hospital. He suffered 6% burns to his hand and tummy.
Anju is aged 12 lives with her brother and parents in Bagmati in the district of Sindhupalchok.
Neighbors had set light to a pile of dry grass in an open area and left it unattended unaware of the danger. While Anju was playing with friends outside, she unknowingly stepped onto the burned area, which was still extremely hot, and suffered 4%,2nd degree burns to both feet. severe burns on both feet.
A neighbor hearing her cry out alerted her father who was collecting wood in the forest and he rushed back and took her to the nearest health post. However, due to the severity of the burns, they were referred to Kanti Children’s Hospital the following day for specialised treatment.
She has a leg deformity for which she has been undergoing treatment for the past 5 years in a rehabilitation hospital for disabled children. Doctors have advised although her legs may not be fully functioning she will be able to walk normally with time and therapy.
The family is from a very low economic background as her father is the sole provider and managing her ongoing leg treatment which had already placed a heavy financial burden on the family. After 12 days she was discharged home to her village.
CHANCE funds physiotherapy, counselling for patients and their families, a nutritious weekly food basket and soft toys for all children on the burns unit. We also provide a £1,000 emergency fund to help parents and their children on especially low income return home to their village, or to provide medicines to take home and food for the parent staying with their child.

Exciting to see the progress of our second school of this year taking shape. GMIN, our long term partner on the ground in Nepal is building four new classrooms at the Malika School in Paisara village, Surkhet. This is our 10th school with GMIN and their 50th in 15 years 👏
The school is located in a remote area 70kms from the main city of Birendranagar in Surkhet which because of the terrain can take six ours to reach and 8 hours during the monsoon season. The school provides an education for children from 7 nearby hamlets. Some of the students walk up to two hours to reach the school which was established in 1988 and provides 11 classes from nursery up to grade 10. Currently there are 230 students. An urgent request to GMIN from the school for 4 new classrooms as a result of the 2015 earthquake which damaged a block of 4 classrooms making them unsafe to be used. This new building will provide a safe environment offering up to 100 children from nursery to grade 4 an education.

Today’s Cardiac Clinic at Siddhasthali Rural Community Hospital witnessed a tremendous response, highlighting the increasing need for specialized cardiac care in our community. Over 40 patients visited the outpatient department with cardiac-related concerns, receiving comprehensive evaluations and support on Nov 23.
Here’s a quick summary of the services provided:
• 17 Echocardiograms (Echo) to assess heart function and detect potential abnormalities.
• 22 Electrocardiograms (ECG) to evaluate heart rhythms and electrical activity.
• 60+ Lab Tests conducted, ensuring precise diagnoses for our patients.
Out of the patients seen, 6 individuals were identified as needing surgical intervention for complex heart conditions and were referred to tertiary care center for specialized management.
We are proud of our dedicated team and the trust our patients place in us. Moving forward, we aim to strengthen our cardiac services further, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment for all.

There have been no posts during my visit to Kathmandu as after being there for 48 hours our sons contacted me to say my husband had been rushed into A&E with an internal haemorrhage. He is in ICU and more stable.

CHANCE for Nepal - Quiz Night
A very special thank you to Jane and Brian and everyone who came to our CHANCE Quiz at The Keep, in Guildford on Wednesday. We had 28 players in 6 teams and raised a brilliant £435. Jane cooked one of her delicious beef pasta dishes with veggie option and salad, which was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Ellan behind the bar, keeping everyone’s glass full.

Every year I take as many of these delightful knitted dolls which are given to an eager pair of tiny hands bringing a smile and comfort to the children on the burns unit at the Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu. The team at BVS (Burn violence survivors) one of our partners on the ground, when giving out the food baskets funded by CHANCE also give a ‘Goody Bag’ of fun things, and a knitted doll.
Since 2012, thousands of dolls have found their way to Nepal, either for the burns unit or to kindergarten and nursery classes in schools in remote areas. Others find their way on a medical camp organised by Mountain Heart Nepal.
I will be visiting our projects in November. Please email me on info@chancefornepal.org if you are able to knit one or two. They are fun to knit and as you can see everyone is different and you can personalise them as you wish. A little skit for a little girl perhaps!

KNITTING PATTERN
To knit a comfort doll begin at the feet and knit a rectangle, changing the yarn colours for each body segment. The number of rows in each part of the doll can be increased and decreased de- pending on the individual design. The finished height of the doll is approx. 15 cms (6inches)
You need:
• Small quantities of double knitting, washable yarn.
• 1 pair of 2.5 –3 mm knitting needles (the knitted fabric needs to be dense to keep the stuffing hidden
• Tapestry needle and good quality polyester toy filling.
To make: Work in stocking stitch throughout • Cast on 32 stitches
• Work 4 rows for feet – change yarn
• Work 14 rows for pants – change yarn
• Work 12 rows for sweater – change yarn • Work 8 rows for face – change yarn
Work 11 rows for hat as follows
• Rows 1-4: Work across rows in stocking stitch
• Row 5: K3, (K2tog, K4) 4 times, K2 tog, K3
• Row 6: Purl
• Row 7: K2, (K2tog, K3)4 times, K2 tog, K3 (22 sts)
• Row 8: purl
• Row 9: K1, (K2tog, K2) 4 times, K2tog, K3 (17sts)
• Row 10: Purl
• Row 11: K1, (K2tog) 8 times
• Draw yarn through remaining stitches , pull up and sew in ends. To finish:
• Sew back seam together, using an invisible seam.
• Stuff body
• Weave a strand of matching yarn across the first face row. Draw up to form neck and firmly secure ends
• Repeat for feet.
• With matching yarn form arms with small backstitches through all layers from waist to 2 rows beneath the neck.
• Define the legs in the same way from bottom to a little below the waistline.
• Embroider facial features as desired

August report from BVS (Burns Violence Survivors).
I share five cases from the 12 patients supported in the burns unit. The report from BVS makes tragic reading as so many accidents are easily preventable. In total, 24 food baskets, 14 goody bags, 66 physiotherapy sessions and 52 counselling sessions, (all funded through CHANCE) were provided to the children and their parents.
All names have been changed and permission given by the parents.
Devi is 18 months old and lives with her parents and older sister in Bagmati. Her father is a furniture maker and mother a housewife.
The family are of low economic condition. Dumar’s father was at work and Dumar was inside the kitchen with her aunt who was heating butter oil (ghee) to cook a Nepalese stew (jaulo). Her aunt went outside to wash the rice for the stew and left Dumar playing by the kitchen rack when the pot of ghee fell off the cooker and the spilled over her. Her mother heard her cry and rushed in to the kitchen. She poured cool water on the burnt area and rang her husband to come home. They took Devi to the District Hospital in Sindhuli, where she received a dressing only. Due to the lack of specialized burn care facilities, she was referred to Kirtipur Hospital, 85kms away on the same day. Due to the expense of the treatment, she wasn’t admitted as an in-patient so each day her parents took her to have dressings changed. After 3 days, Devi developed a fever and was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was then taken by bus to Kanti Children's Hospital for further treatment. After three weeks she was discharged home and is recovering.
Arun is 3 years old and lives with his mother, grandparents and four siblings. His father is a tailor and works in Kathmandu to provide for his family and sends money home.
Arun’s grandfather had brought petrol to heal a goat’s wound and Arun mistook the petrol for oil and took it into the kitchen. The petrol caught fire and 5 family members, including his grandmother and four siblings were also burnt in the fire, fortunately only superficially. His mother had gone to fetch gone to fetch water when the incident happened.
However, Arun was burnt severely on his chest, tummy, left leg, ears, chin and mouth. He was then taken to Sarlahi hospital, after one day, due to the severity of his burns he was taken to the National Trauma Centre at Bir hospital. After assessment, his mother and uncle brought him to the Kanti. He is recovering.
Maan is 18 months old and lives with his parents and sister. They moved from Makwanpur into the city for better job opportunities. His father is a sculptor and mother a housewife. Maan was playing with his sister when he suddenly pulled the pressure cooker which was full of pulses off the cooking rack. His father was working upstairs and his mother was doing chores. His sister ran to tell her parents what had happened and they rushed to him and they walked to the nearest medical centre 15 minutes away. Because of the severity of the burns an ambulance was called and he was taken to Patan Hospital. Maan received 20% burns to the left hand side of his face, neck and chest. BVS asked if CHANCE would support him at Paton Hospital with food baskets and a goody bag which we are doing and his treatment is ongoing.
Sonon is aged 9 and from Bagmati. He lives with his parents. After he came home from school he was playing on his own and his mother was cooking. His father works as a labourer and was at work. There is a high tension power line nearby their home and Sonon was using a rod and touched the power line and was electrocuted. His mother heard the sound but was unaware her son was hurt A neighbour saw the incident and ran to Sonon. The mother was in total shock and froze and was unable to go to the hospital so the neighbour took him. He suffered 3% very deep burn to his hand. The families financial situation is very poor and they have needed to borrow money from neighbours to pay for his treatment. He too is in the Patan Hospital and receiving help from BVS and CHANCE.
Kumar is aged 2 and comes from Makwanpur. His father is a taxi driver and mother a housewife. Kumar’s mother plugged in an electric kettle and placed it on the table while she went outside to fetch something. Kumar accidently pushed the table and the hot water spilt over him. His mother rushed in hearing him cry out and took him the 55-minute journey to the Kanti Children’s Hospital. Kumar suffered 15%, second degree burns to his tummy, leg and groin area.

Chance for Nepal
I wanted to share this beautiful video, from BVS (Burns Violence Survivors Nepal) our partner on the ground in Nepal since 2007. BVS are a truly courageous, dedicated and fantastic organisation working tirelessly, giving care to children in the Kanti Children's Hospital, the only government Children's Hospital in Nepal.
CHANCE plays a part too, by providing a weekly nutritious food basket, containing 18 eggs, bananas, apples, chocolate biscuits, juice, a type of porridge with protein powder, barley, wheat, and nuts. If the child is too young, then the mother enjoys the contents, she is probably breast feeding and in desperate need of nourishment too. Children need two and a half times their daily calorie intake to aid recovery.
We also fund physiotherapy and counselling for the patient and their family to help come to terms with what has happened which is often life changing.
Every child also receives a 'Goody Bag' containing a toothbrush, knitted comfort doll (I have a team of fabulous ladies who love knitting these dolls which I take out with me each year), A soft toy, Rubik cube, babies rattles, packets of fun stickers, all find their way into a pair of little hands 🥰❤.
Lastly, we provide an emergency fund of £1,000p.a. to help with transportation, clothes and medicines for the mother and child to return to their village which is often a day’s travel away.💕

QUIZ NIGHT
A splendid and recording breaking evening at The Keep, in Guildford last night. A magnificent £645 was raised with 32 people playing in 6 teams.
Jane and Brian, the landlords are incredible the amount of energy and time they give to our quiz nights to make them so enjoyable. Besides organising the questions Jane gives us a delicious complementary light supper. Thanks go to Yianne behind the bar who kept everyone’s drinks top up. 💕
Great atmosphere and fun on a lovely summers evening. Lovely to welcome two newcomers, Eloise and Sophie whose presence gave an overall win to my team…a first! 👏
A great boost to our overall amount raised were 5 dashing young men, top hats and tails and a beautiful lady who after a fabulous day at Ascot popped into The Keep for a drink in the garden and most generously donated £135 to the evening. 😍
The funds raised from last night will go to Aadesh, who have sponsored his education in Nepal for over 12 years. Aadesh, has won a scholarship to study in Louisiana, from August, a wonderful opportunity for him. Having completed his 1st semester at the prestigious GATE College in Kathmandu he will join the 2nd semester of year one in Hospitality Management specialising in accountancy in the US. This is a four-year course. We will be following him with great interest.

It is with delight I share this post of some of the children enjoying a cooking experience at Yangchenma Academy in Doramba, which lies at 3,400 metres above sea level and a five hour drive from Kathmandu.
CHANCE has been supporting this school for over 5 years. The founder Bimila Ghising with a pure heart of goodness touched my heart the first time I met her. The school is run on Buddhist lines and starts each take with meditation.
CHANCE funds a teacher's salary, and has funded a water tank, toilet block, desks, whiteboards, books and stationary over the years. There are 87 students, 52 girls and 35 boys aged from 2 to 13.
This year brings 19 scholarships, for academically bright children who are unable to pay the fees.
Some children walk up to 2 hours to reach school each morning and the same home after a busy day!
